Holistic Nutrition & Dietetics

What is Holistic Dietetics?
Holistic Nutrition & Dietetics is the branch of knowledge concerned with nutrition, diet and its effects on individual and collective health. It takes a ‘bigger picture’ approach. This approach supports personal practices that improve wellbeing, including attention to individual physical, economic, social, spiritual, emotional, and other needs. It also recognises that health is not just an individual issue, and that there are many social determinants that impact health.
Dietitians in integrative and functional medicine are a relatively new breed of nutrition practitioner whose core philosophy centres around this holistic, personalised yet also ‘bigger picture’ approach to health and healing. These practitioners are also known as: Holistic Dietitians, Integrative Dietitians, Functional Dietitians, Real Food Dietitians, or Ancestral Dietitians. Some of us use the word ‘nutritionist’ in place of dietitian.
We integrate a variety of evidence-based nutrition therapies including whole foods, tailored supplements, nutritional counselling, and mind body modalities in clinical practice.
Who is this for?
A Holistic Dietetic consultation can assist anyone who wants to improve their health and nutrition through food and lifestyle change, supporting people to build a healthy relationship with food and with their bodies.
Dietetic therapy not only focuses on food and eating but can also address concerns about body image, weight, physical activities and thought patterns that may be preventing people from living a healthy balanced life. The aim of dietetic therapy is to provide nutritional counselling to optimise health and wellbeing using dietary approaches.
Accredited Practicing Dietitians are qualified health professionals who can assist people to translate scientifically relevant nutritional information to their own lives and circumstances, establishing eating patterns which nourish body and mind, enabling people to live well.
An Accredited Practicing Dietitian is qualified to:
- assess the nutritional status of her clients
- provide individually tailored dietary advice
- offer education and support to establish healthful eating practices
- identify and discuss helpful and unhelpful food habits and beliefs, and
- assist with maintaining positive dietary changes through regular monitoring as required.
Our team dietitian takes a holistic, collaborative, client-centred approach. In the initial session your dietitian will identify and discuss your personal dietary concerns, assessing your current nutritional status and establishing food and behavioural goals taking into account your lifestyle and food preferences. Follow-up sessions provide the opportunity for further dietary guidance to review therapeutic goals and support you to sustain changes to improve your health and wellbeing.
Specialty areas covered by our team dietitian that have necessitated extensive postgraduate training include eating disorder therapy, pregnancy and breastfeeding nutrition, and childhood eating challenges. She takes a holistic dietetic approach in all areas. Some of the issues our dietitian has experience in treating are:
- Eating Disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, OSFED, ARFID)
- Eating Concerns (compulsive eating, emotional eating, yo-yo dieting, fussy eating, orthorexia)
- Weight Concerns* (‘weight management’, ‘weight loss’, ‘obesity’)
- Body Image Concerns (body dissatisfaction, body composition concerns)
- Women’s Health (infertility, hypothalamic amenorrhoea, PCOS, endometriosis)
- Hormonal Health (thyroid and adrenal issues)
- Pre-conception, Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Nutrition
- Childhood Eating Challenges (fussy eaters, ‘overweight’ children)
- Digestive Health (IBS, food intolerances)
Casey adopts a non diet treatment approach to all weight concerns and practices from a Body Acceptance and Health At Every Size® framework.
